I learned about Kaki King from a friend of mine during the summer before 'Until We Felt Red...' was released. She insisted I listen to Kaki's music. Initially, I was taken aback by the falsettos of some of the songs on UWFR. It wasn't until I listened to her older material that I started enjoying the new sounds. I quite enjoy the soundscape kk's been creating lately.

I've been thinking long and hard about this because i couldny believe that i didnt remember how i got into her....

I`ve come up with a good story that i think its how it happened: the thing is that I really like womens voices in song beter than a man`s, so i went all over the intener looking for woman-singing bands (sleater kinney, the breeders, pj harvey, the go! team, the duke spirit etc) and i guees in that crazy search period i found kaki, and i must say is the best of all....

Wow. It was dangerously close to five years ago now. I saw her play "Close Your Eyes and You'll Burst Into Flames" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien just on a whim; and I fell in love. Completely and uttered floored by it, and I've been obsessing ever since.

Re: How Did You Discover Kaki?

So one day I'm sitting on the internet going through my Flickr photos and friends' pictures, and all the while I was on the phone with an old friend of mine from North Carolina who is now a painter and makes some really pretty paintings, collages and things and we get to talking about music and I told her that I was sick and tired of all the "smut" I had been listening to and needed something new and exciting in my ears. Granted this was only a month ago I think. So the name "Kaki King" comes out of her mouth and she demanded that I look her up right then and there. I looked her up on youtube because it is one of the easiest ways to listen to music nowadays without having to leave the room, and I don't think I was able to utter another word after putting on the first video I saw, which was Playing With Pink Noise. My friend told me some songs that she thought I'd like but I honestly couldn't remember them and still can't. Now I just own all her CDs and I don't get enough. It has even changed the way I look at the guitar (even though I am in now way shape or form as good as kaki is and Hell I doubt I'll get anywhere near that level. The amount of talent that pours out of her fingertips floors my jaw. Long Live Kaki King.
